Bear Island WMA in the ACE Basin of South Carolina - October 23, 2014. Mom Alligator with babies in one of the impoundments. She is about 6-8 feet long which is about the size I often see - I have never seen a 10-13 foot female which is often the case with males. It is October which is about the right time of year (most born in August). Often I see 30-40 babies but this time I saw only 4 but certainly more were along the edges. I was trying to record the babies chirp alarm by stepping forward - the baby did indeed chirp but not loud enough to record and then it changed directions and went to Mom. Moms can and do charge to protect their babies so you need to be very careful with alligators like this!
